The Preston family of Desford, Leicestershire have been farming at Desford since 1944, and began agricultural contracting in 1964. Ten years ago the decision to expand the contracting business was put into practice.

Today Prestons Contractors employs 15 full time staff and up to another 8 seasonal staff and is managed by Adam.

Adam is keen to embrace the latest technology in precision farming and currently has a selection of equipment including self steering guidance systems and field mapping, allowing him to record data on his own and costumer's fields. Variable rates are no problem with this technology and it is used with maize drilling, fertiliser spreading and lime spreading.

With up to 20 tractors working for Prestons Contractors at any one time, fleet maintenance is key. The company employs two full time fitters carrying out emergency repairs and scheduled maintenance, either in the work shop or on site.

The farm is based on 1000 acres of arable and grassland which is a mixture of owned, short term tenancy and temporary grazing. We grow wheat, oil seed rape, maize, barley and short term mowing grass.

The family also have a dairy and beef enterprise, which is managed by Gordon and Paul. Having recently upgraded the milking system the company now looks forward to expanding the herd. All calves are kept, heifers going to the herd, with bull calves being reared and finished on the holding.

Brothers Arthur and Gordon Preston, along with their respective sons Adam and Paul, work together on the farm and in the agricultural contracting business.
